Hashtags are arguably the most iconic symbol social media has seen to date. What started as a simple # sign transformed into a universal tool for categorizing content, sparking movements, and creating digital communities.
But as social media continues to evolve, so does the role of hashtags. Once a must-use strategy for visibility and engagement, hashtags are now at the center of a growing debate:
Are hashtags still relevant, or are they becoming obsolete?
The Rise and Fall of the Hashtag
Hashtags were originally used to categorize posts, marking the beginning of algorithms. Since then, they have been a way for users to join movements, show their support, and participate in global conversations. I remember using hashtags in middle school for #ManCrushMonday and #WomanCrushWednesday—which still makes me cringe, BTW. Over time, they became more monumental and were used for global movements, like #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter.
Recently, social media platforms have shifted away from hashtags. Instead, they now rely on artificial intelligence and user engagement metrics to curate feeds, reducing the need for hashtags. Elon Musk, owner of X (formerly Twitter), stated, “Please stop using hashtags. The system doesn’t need them anymore, and they look ugly.” Additionally, at the end of 2024, Instagram removed the option to follow hashtags entirely and experts say they are not beneficial for boosting posts on LinkedIn either.
Should You Still Use Hashtags?
Although their value in boosting visibility has declined, hashtags may still be useful in a few ways.
- Connecting with the Right Audience: People can still search for hashtags, so if you’re looking to connect with a smaller, niche audience, they may still be useful.
- Keyword Usage: If your post’s text doesn’t explicitly include target keywords, adding them as hashtags may help. However, many platforms recommend integrating keywords directly into the post rather than relying on hashtags.
- Branded Hashtags, Events, or Contests: These can still add value by encouraging and tracking specific engagement and participation.
The Future of Hashtags
Hashtags aren’t necessarily dead, but they’re no longer the magic engagement tool they once were. Instead of stuffing posts with #hashtags, the best strategy is to focus on creating engaging, high-quality content and meaningful engagement. One thing’s for sure: social media is always changing, and staying adaptable is key.
What do you think? Do you still use hashtags in your posts?
